Another Super Monday in KHL

20 teams played today with each of them scoring at least one goal. Most games were close until the end and three even went into overtime.

Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg once more kept the result close but the last in the KHL table also again lost. This time they were beaten at home by Severstal Cherepovets. Denis Kazionov and Nikolai Kazakovtsev pathed the way for the guests' win in the first period before Branislav Mezei cut the lead for Avto at 40:29 in power play. In the last minute Yekaterinburg tried it without their goalie but couldn't force overtime anymore.

Salavat Yulayev Ufa had the big opportunity to decided their home match against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod already in the first 20 minutes but despite an early three-goal lead after strikes by Sergei Zinovyev, Nikita Filatov and Igor Mirnov they had to see how the guests made it 3-2 until 47:08 through Mikko Kousa and Pyotr Schastlivy. But despite being the better side in the third period Torpedo couldn't score another one.

In recent weeks Belarussian side Dinamo Minsk showed a clearly better image in KHL but today they received a really bad package in their away game against Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Especially Justin Hodgman could convince on the Metallurg roster with 4 points (2+2). Only light at the end of the tunnel for Dinamo: their lockout center Evander Kane scored his first point and goal when he made it 6-2 in the third period. In the end Magnitogorsk won 7-2.

Vityaz Chekhov is always good for a surprise, especially in this year's away games. Today they managed to turnd a 0-3 deficit until 37:56 in Chelyabinsk to beat local side and clear favourites Traktor with 4-3 in the shootout where Artemy Panarin and Evgeny Timkin were succesful for Vityaz while both Traktor attempts failed.

Ak Bars Kazan now is only one point behind the Kharlamov Division leaders from Chelyabinsk after beating Atlant Moscow Oblast with the result of 3-1. In the middle period Danis Zaripov and Denis Golubev made it 2-0 for Kazan before Nikolai Zherdev with a late goal at 39:51 cut the lead to just one. Early in the third period again Zaripov decided the match for Ak Bars.

The incredible waste of chances and a stellar performance by opposing goalie Semyon Varlamov let Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk lose at home against Tarasov Division leaders Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. After exactly one minute was over Loko player Yury Petrov had to take seat in the penalty box for slashing with the result of a Neftekhimik goal at 01:48 by Tomas Netik. Despite the great start the hosts couldn't extend their lead in the following time and instead a PP goal by Niklas Hagman made it 1-1 at 53:33. In the shootout Varlamov, who had 54 saves in regulation and overtime, crowned his performance with blocking the shots of Tomas Netik and Petr Koukal. On the other side Emil Galimov and Niklas Hagman earned the extra point for Loko.

In the first period Norwegian forward Patrick Thoresen twice assisted for SKA team colleague Tony Martensson. At 35:26 Thoresen and Martensson again worked well together by giving the assist for the 3-0 through Ilya Kovalchuk in power play. One and a half minutes later Nikolai Bushuyev earned the consolidation goal for Spartak Moscow but the team from the capital had to see how Alexander Kucheryavenko gained the three-goal lead for SKA back in the last period.

Another team from Moscow, Dynamo, made it better by defeating Latvian Dinamo Riga with 3-1. Swede Nicklas Backstrom, who in times without lockout plays for NHL franchise Washington Capitals, scored his first goal for Dynamo Moscow with only three seconds left to the first intermission. In the third period Riga scored the surprising equalizer through Gints Meija but Marek Kvapil and Denis Kokarev avoided a fail for the favourites from Moscow.

At the end of last week Lev Prague had released their head coach Josef Jandac and in the first period it looked like the team could take a boost from this. Marcel Hossa and Zdeno Chara made it 2-0 for the Czechs but in the second period the guests Metallurg Novokuznetsk came back through Alexei Yefimov and Randy Robitaille. Early in overtime Filipp Metlyuk made the horror for Lev perfect with his game winner for Metallurg and extending the losing streak of the Lions.

A lot more succesful was the home match of the other KHL newcomers Slovan Bratislava who had a 3-0 lead after the first period through Andrej Sekera, Jan Lipiansky and Peter Olvecky. In the middle period guests Amur Khabarovsk could cut this lead to just one through Alexander Loginov and Mika Pyorala which made Slovan suffer till the late goal by Michel Miklik at 58:06 made sure all three points would stay in Slovakia.
