Slovakia rally a 2-goal deficit in the third to beat Switzerland 6-4 and for the first time since 2009 got into quarters
Slovakia and Switzerland faced each other in the third place deciding game at the third WJC in a row. If first two times Switzerland won 4-1 and 6-4, but this year Slovakia got into the quarters.
In the first period during a 1 minute and 7 seconds span Switzerland got a 2-goal lead with Joel Vermin and Sven Andrighetto goals. But a minute later Matus Chovan assisted by Tomas Jurco and Martin Daloga cut the lead to a 1 goal.
Two penalties from Matej Bene and Vladimir Dolnik in the second gave the Swiss team a chance with a 5-on-3 play. Joel Vermin used it and made a double at 28:40. Soon Slovaks scored again with Matus Chovan's second goal of the night.
Early in the third Tanner Richard increased the Swiss lead, but it was the last thing that they managed to do. For three minutes Slovakia tied the game and grabbed a 1-goal lead with Tomas Matousek, Martin Marincin, Matus Chovan. Martin Gernat with a power-play goal increased the lead of the Slovakian team at 49:43. Slovakia outshot Switzerland 14-7 in the last period and deserved the win.
Matus Chovan scored his first goals in the tournament and made a hat-trick; Tomas Jurco assisted this night for 4 times but best players become Tomas Matousek and Tanner Richard.
