Canada and USA advanced to the final of the World Junior Championship in Edmonton. Canada easily defeated Russia 5-0 while USA had a tougher game against Finland.
The final of the 2021 World Juniors will be a North American affair. Canada got a great start against Russia in the first semi final and had a 3-0 lead after only 15 minutes. They made it 4-0 early in the second and Russia were never close to getting back except for a goal by Mikhail Abramov late in the second period that was disallowed for offside after a Canadian coach's challenge. The top scorer Dylan Cozens added an empty net goal with 89 seconds to go and Russia were beaten, shutout and eliminated.
USA- Finland was a much closer game. At 12:39 Alex Turcotte scored 1-0 for USA from just outside the crease but Kasper Simontaival replied 1:27 later on the powerplay. Late in the second period USA scored two quick goals by John Farinacci and Matthew Boldy to get a 3-1 lead. Just like in the quarter final against Sweden, Finland never gave up. Kasper Simontaival got his second goal at 51:38 and Roni Hirvonen tied it at 56:17. The Americans recovered and fought hard to get a winner in regulation. and so they did. Arthur Kaliyev shot high towards Finnish goalie Kari Piiroinen who went low and the game was won.
The final between Canada and USA will be played in Rogers Place, Edmonton tonight at 19:30 (GMT-7) and the bronze medal game Finland-Russia four hours earlier.
