Christian Bäckman have been of the most important players in Frölunda HC, but the last couple of years haven't been so successful. Therefore, Frölunda decided not to re-assign the former NHL star.

In an interview with Alingsås Magazine, Bäckman says: -"This is something that I've been thinking of for a longer time. It's about various parts as how I performed on the ice, but also how my body have felt lately."

Christian started his career in Frölunda 1996 and have represented the club in a total of 546 games (including J20). In SHL Christian played 480 games and recorded a total of 154 points. Christian have also represented St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets in NHL, where he played a total of 301 games with 80 points as result. Now the 35-year old defenseman decides to retire and he's certainly a prospect for getting his jersey in Scandinaviums roof.

-"Off course it feels hard to leave. For a very long time, hockey has been everything for me, but I'm very proud at the same time of everything that I've been honored to be a part of. It feels strange not knowing what to do in the fall," Christian said.
