Canada has made it to the medal round after beating Germany 2-1 on Thursday evening.

Team Canada controlled the game from the drop of the puck, but only led 1-0 after 40 minutes of play. The opening came at 17:11 in the game on the power play when Mitch Marner got the puck deep into the zone to Ryan O'Reilly. O'Reilly, who had been strong at the goal line, made a pass out to Mark Scheifele, who fired one home to make it 1-0.

The second period was 100% dominated by Canada, who allowed just a single shot against. They did, however, take 20 shots themselves, with their 18th finally making it in. At 38:08,  Mike Matheson's shot from the point was stopped but Jeff Skinner's chance wasn't, with the Carolina Hurricanes forward backhanding the puck around Philipp Grubauer and in to make it 2-0 Canada.

Canada was nearing 50 shots in the game when Germany scored while shorthanded. At 53:21, fourth liner Yannick Seidenberg took the pass from captain Christian Ehrhoff and came in all alone, beating out Chris Lee before deking out Calvin Pickard to give Germany life, cutting Canada's lead in half. Unfortunately for the host nation, it wasn't enough to get the job done as Canada would shut them out for the remainder of the game, holding on for the 2-1 victory to advance to the semi-finals.

Canada will meet up with their hated rivals, Russia, on Saturday in a rematch of the 2015 gold medal game when Canada won their first of back-to-back medals. In the other quarter-final, Sweden will battle their hated Finnish opponents in a chance to play for gold on Sunday.
