The current Euro Hockey Tour agreement between the four countries Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden ends in the spring of 2014. Fans, clubs and federations agree that the current EHT setup isn't good, so we may se big changes in the future.
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that the EHT era we are used to see soon may be over. In the current setup the four countries host a tournament each with one of six games of each tournament played elsewhere. In for example the current Oddset Hockey Games one game is played in Russia and six in Sweden. With this format the teams get four home games and eight away games in a EHT season.
A possible solution in the future is that the teams play double head-to-head games during more frequent but shorter national team breaks. For example Finland can play Sweden in Helsinki on Saturday and in Turku on Sunday while Czech Republic play Russia in Prague and Brno. This way the teams get 50% home games instead of current 33%. And the national team breaks can be shorter - a demand from the national leagues.
"There are many different scenarios, but the key is to find a format that everyone is happy with", says the Czech General Manager Slavomir Lener to Aftonbladet.
In Sweden the fans have been very critical to the Euro Hockey Tour for years. Instead there are people requesting some kind of European Championship.
