Westerlund to lead Finland in Sochi

In a press conference few hours before the match between Russia and Sweden at Karjala Cup, Kalervo Kummola, President of the Finnish Federation, announced the appointment of Erkka Westerlund for the 2014, the olympic season. His assistants will be current Espoo Blues coach Lauri Marjamaki and Jokerit assistant coach Hannu Virta. Jari Kurri and Timo Jutila continue as GM and team manager.
"The season is particularly important to us because of the Olympic Games in Sochi. We wanted an experienced coach for the national team" said  Kummola. Westerlund will begin his new job in early June 2013 and his contract ends at the end of May 2014
Westerlund has previously served as head coach of the national team from November 2004 to the spring of 2007. He wonthe silver at  2006 Olympic Games in Turin and the bronze medal at the IHWC in the same year, and the silver in 2007. After having coached Jokerit Helsinki in last two season, Westerlund is currently the Director of Vierumäki Academy.
The current head coach of Finland's Jukka Jalonen announced last summer that after t2013 IHWC in Helsinki/Stockholm he will left Finland bench, and the Olympics are not included in his plans.
