Swedish ET participants are not invincible

Färjestads BK and Brynäs IF are the first Swedish teams to lose in this ET season. Mannheim and Ingolstadt win in Finland.

Färjestads BK - EV Zug 1-2

One day after their solid home win against the current Swiss champion ZSC Lions, Swedish Färjestads BK lost to NLA's regular season winners EV Zug. For the Swiss team it was even more important as they lost their ET opener against Frölunda on Friday. FBK earned an early lead through Anton Grundel in the 7th minute but Corsin Casutt tied the result for the Swiss side just minutes later. Färjestad stayed the dominating team but wasn't able to create big opportunities. In the 43rd it was Josh Holden whose PP goal turned the result around completely. After that the hosts put everyone in front of the guests' goal but Sandro Zurkirchen kept his net clean in the remaining time. FBK missed many good opportunities and have to blame themselves for letting out 4 consecutive power plays in the last period.

Tappara Tampere - Bili Tigry Liberec 7-2

On Friday Tappara already beat their Czech rivals from Pardubice with a three-goal difference while Liberec lost against TPS Turku. Despite 30 strong minutes of the White Tigers this trend continued today. An even beginning on both sides saw the first goal come when Henrik Haapala scored for Tappara on the rebound in the 14th. Less than two minutes later a mistake by the whole Tappara defense made the equalizer through Tomas Urban possible. The first penalty in the second period led to the 2-1 when Aleksander Barkov used another rebound to get the hosts back in front. Again Liberec found a fast answer and Peter Galambos tied the match in the 25th. With the same amount of players on the ice Liberec looked stable but when they started to take far too many penalties in the second half of the middle period the game was decided by Tampere. Chris Connolly, Jerry Ahtola and Tuukka Mäntylä were all succesful in the PP to start the last 20 minutes with a three-goal lead. The win was never in danger anymore until the final whistle. Instead Ahtola in a 4-on-4 situation and Antti Erkinjuntti with the 5th (!!!) power play goal for the hosts, crushed the Czechs completely and let Tappara conquer the top spot in the East Division.

Djurgårdens IF - HC Fribourg-Gottéron 1-0

Another good performance leads to the second home win of the recently relegated Djurgårdens IF against a Swiss team. For Fribourg-Gottéron it was already the third way loss in this ET campaign making it extremly difficult for them to keep their chances for a final stage qualification alive. A lone goal by Henrik Eriksson 19 seconds before the end of the second period let the Stockholm-based DIF have a perfect ET start. American goalie Chet Pickard, who played for the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones last season, earned a shutout in his first ever ET appearance that was never in real danger.

Frölunda HC - ZSC Lions 2-0

For Zürich it was the second away loss in Sweden in two days while Frölunda started into the ET season with 6 points in two matches and thanks to a shutout by Slovakian national goalie Julius Hudacek they now lead in the West Division. The ZSC Lions started aggressively into the game with several occasions in the very first minutes but the first power play was finished by Magnus Kahnberg with the early home lead. The guests stayed the better team until the end of the first period but couldn't capitalize on their superiority of play. In the second Frölunda improved and earned their lead subsequently - and this despite taking several stupid penalties. Early in the third a shorthander by Mikael Johansson brought the decision in favor of the local side.

HIFK - ERC Ingolstadt 3-5

One day after beating Mannheim, HIFK faced another DEL opponent. This time they lost due to a strong third-period perfomance by ERC Ingolstadt. It was a nice, entertaining back and forth match of two equal squads. Ingolstadt's lead through Joe Motzko was tied by HIFK through Iiro Pakarinen, still in the first period. Around "half time" Björn Barta got the lead back to Ingolstadt but HIFK's Toni Söderholm and Markus Granlund brought their side in front for the first time. Alexander Oblinger (PP) and Christoph Gawlik laid the foundation for the away win of the Germans early in the third. With 2:26 left on the clock again Oblinger decided the game, letting the Bavarians have a good 4-point start into their first ever ET season. Not only did the DEL team leave a good impression, so did their fans who celebrated their team throughout most parts of the game.

Jokerit Helsinki - Adler Mannheim 1-2 SO

Mannheim earned their first two ET points this season. One day after a terrible penalty killing against HIFK (0-4), they concentrated on a good defense against aggressive Jokerit players. They did a good job but lay back after Jarkko Ruutu transformed a penalty shot in the 34th minute. Five minutes later Frank Mauer used one of the few counter attacks of the Eagles for the equalizer. Both teams created good scoring chances in the third period with a little overweight for Jokerit, especially in the OT. Yanick Lehoux and Frank Mauer scored in the shootout while young goalie Felix Brückmann saved both tries by Tappara for the extra point. A strong performance this night brought him three stars.

Brynäs IF - SC Bern 3-4 SO

An incredible last-minute race to catch up let the Swiss vice champions turn a three-goal deficit into a SO win. In the first two periods the fans barely saw any action in front of both goals and only Brynäs' Jonas Nordqvist had scored (already in the 13th minute). Sebastian Entfeld and Daniel Widing added another two goals in the thrid period it seemed the hosts would get three easy points. Once Pascal Berger had brought Bern on the scoreboard, the guests tried it with more pressure and with 4:52 to go they were rewarded with a goal by Daniel Rubin. Now the hosts were in serious trouble and faced desperate attacks by SC Bern. 21 seconds before the final whistle Ryan Gardner saved his team by getting the match into OT. After this one stayed goalless, Gardner became the hero of his team when he scored the shootout winner to earn the first two points for Bern in this ET season. For Brynäs the late loss of two points was a completely unnecessary give-away.
