After a tied game at 60 minutes and a 5-minute overtime the game between the North American rivals went to shootout.
Jordan Eberle and Rick Nash both scored for Canada in the shootout while USA’s Jack Johnson and Blake Wheeler missed.
Canada took the lead of the game for the first time at 45:22 when they had a four-on-three man advantage and Jason Spezza scored from the right circle on an assist by John Tavares.
Six minutes later USA had a power play and Derek Stepan tied it at 3.
The Canadians out-shot the Americans 52-20 but Ty Conklin in the USA’s net managed to take the game to a shootout decision. There he wasn’t as successful and allowed both shots.
"Our goaltending was tremendous and gave us a chance to win the hockey game," said the American head coach Scott Gordon.
"We've got to learn how to finish games off," said Rick Nash. Evander Kane added: "I think we hit three posts in three shifts there. The bounces definitely weren't going our way."
USA took the lead twice in the first period. Mike Komisarek scored 1-0 and Jack Johnson made it 2-1. In between, Canada’s Brent Burns had tied it.
The second time that Canada tied the game was at 43:27 when John Tavares got the 2-2 goal with a little luck.
