- Coming into the semifinals, Phil Kessel was leading the tournament in points scored. Kessel scored five goals and provided three assists for a total of eight points in Team USA's first four matches.
- Canada has not won an Olympic gold medal in men's ice hockey outside of the Americas in 62 years, its last being at Oslo 1952.
- No team has retained its Olympic gold medal since Soviet Union in 1988.
