Austria got an important win and Latvia lost for the third consecutive game when the teams met in Helsinki this afternoon.
Austria won the game against Latvia 6-3 and earned three very important points. The team that finish last in the group relegate to Division 1. After this game Latvia is now the only team with no points. Germany has one point while Austria and France have three each.
"We knew Latvia has a good team. They were the favorites and we were the underdog. We used our chances, and now we're happy we got the three points", says Austria's Markus Peintner to IIHF.com.
It was Latvia that took the lead in the fourth minute when Armands Berzins beat Bernard Starkbaum. Florian Iberer and Andre Lakos replied to give Austria a 2-1 lead after the first period.
Austrian superstar Thomas Vanek scored for the second game in a row to make it 3-1 at 23:05. Mario Altmann added 4-1 a few minutes later.
The Latvians hadn't given up. Agris Saviels made it 4-2 late in the second period and Lauris Darzins 4-3 in the opening of the third. But the Austrians secured the win with late goals by Michael Raffl and Daniel Oberkofler.
