Washington Capitals forward will be one of few celebrities to carry the torch
Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin will take part in the Olympic torch relay ahead of the Olympic Games in Sochi, said the president of the organizing committee Sochi 2014 Dmitry Chernyshenko.
"There is a quota of torchbearers decided by the organizing committee, a small half is proposed by main sponsors: Coca-Cola and Railways Ingosstrakh. The rest is spread across regions. Somewhere will run a celebrity, but I do not think it will be massive. We recommend that mainly ordinary people take part in the relay. In fact, each man running the fire in the relay becomes a celebrity.
Coca-Cola has put out a film with Ovechkin in it. That means Ovechkin will be one of the torch-bearers,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
The Olympic Torch Relay will begin October 7, 2013. The run will be attended by about 14,000 torchbearers who overcome a total of 65,000 kilometers.
