Cologne and Hamburg with home wins

Two matches were played in the DEL on Tuesday. Both home teams won by scoring lots of goals.

The Hamburg Freezers received Eisbären Berlin for today's top game. Jerome Flaake, Thomas Oppenheimer and Brandon Reid earned a solid three-goal lead for the hosts in the middle period before a crazy third period brought the three points in danger several times. First Mark Katic and Darin Olver made it 3-2 until 43:38 already before Christoph Schubert and Thomas Oppenheimer restored the three-goal advantage for Hamburg. Still Berlin didn't give up yet and came back through Barry Tallackson and Mads Christensen. With a 5 on 3 power play David Wolf made everything clear and scored the 6-4 for the Freezers at 54:41. For Berlin this meant the end of a four-game road trip with losses only and just one point in these. For sure there are better ways to start a new year.
Kölner Haie showed an excellent performance tonight against EHC Red Bull München and beat them 5-1. Power play strikes by Chris Minard and John Tripp gave Cologne a 2-0 lead in the first period that was doubled by Felix Schütz in the last 20 minutes. Defender Andreas Holmqvist even added another one with the men advantage before Christian Wichert scored the late consolation goal for the Bavarians at 56:04.
