Straubing and Ingolstadt keep their playoff ambitions alive

The two underdogs had to win to stay in competition and so they did - each by scoring three goals.
Eisbären Berlin - Straubing Tigers 1:3In game 3 of the DEL semis Berlin had to take the first loss of this year's DEL playoffs and after 11 consecutive playoff wins including last season. After a goalless first period it was Straubing player Bruno St. Jacques who tried it from the blue line and then his shot was deflected twice - first by his team colleague Bernhard Keil and then by a Berlin defender - so that the puck entered the goal in the middle of the second period. Just one and a half minutes later St. Jacques stopped Laurin Braun in his counter attack with his stick so that a penalty shot was awarded to the home side. Tigers goalie Barry Brust was unlucky as he almost had the puck but it was deflected from his pads into the net. In the 49th Sandro Schönberger captured a pass in Berlin's defending zone while his team Straubing was shorthanded and then his pass found Dustin Whitecotton who had no problems to make it 1-2. In an even period Straubing defended their lead well and French international Laurent Meunier decided the match with less than two minutes to go with an empty netter.
Berlin leads 2-1 in the series
ERC Ingolstadt - Adler Mannheim 3:0 The home side was the clearly better team in the first 20 minutes and therefore deserved their two goal lead. In a power play Thomas Greilinger with a very hard shot into the right bottom corner opened the score for Ingolstadt already in the 8th minute. With exactly two minutes to go in the first, Mannheim was about to receive a penalty but before their player could go to the penalty box Timothy Hambly scored another one for Ingolstadt into the left corner. In the following time both teams created various opportunities but in the end no other goal was scored prior to the last minute of play when Greilinger with his second of the day made it 3-0 with an empty netter.
Mannheim leads 2-1 in the series
Both series will continue on Wednesday.
