Classic Swiss club in financial trouble

Classic Swiss club in financial trouble

04 Jul 2011 | Fredrik Pålsson

HC Ambri Piotta has played in the top league of Switzerland since 1985, but now may have to withdraw from the NLA due to financial difficulties.

Although HC Ambri Piotta has never won the Swiss Championship, they are considered a classic Swiss club. The club from the small villages of Ambri and Piotta with a population of only a few hundered is very popular around Switzerland and Europe. But, for the first time since 1985, Switzerland's top league might be played with out the blue and white team.

The team finished in last place in the 2010/2011 season and is also experiencing trouble off the ice with bad finances. In the last six weeks, the club has managed to raise over 1,100,000 CHF (around 900,000 Euro), however, they still need to raise another 400,000 CHF before July 31 to fulfill the financial demands of playing in the Nationalliga.
