Israel won the World Championship Division 2B in Mexico City to promote to Division 2A. North Korea are relegated.
With five wins in five games Israel won the past week's tournament in Mexico City. In the first game Israel faced Iceland and won 6-3. A win that later would prove to be deciding for the outcome of the tournament. Iceland finished second and with a win in the first game they might as well have won the tournament. It was a close game in front of 750 spectators in the Santa Fe Ice rink. Israel scored an early goal and was then ahead for most of the game. It was close until the end. Iceland got 4-3 at 57:45 but Israel could secure the win with two empty net goals.
The second game, against New Zealand, was a similar story. Israel scored an early goal and was ahead for most of the game. Then secured it with 5-3 in the empty net five seconds before the buzzer.
In the third game North Korea was easily defeated 9-3 in 5-point game by Israeli captain Eli Sherbatov.
Game four was again a close affair. Israel needed overtime to defeat the host Mexico. Sergei Frenkel scored the winner at 62:56.
Georgia was beaten 7-3 in the last game in another great game by Sherbatov. Six points for him this time and the scoring title was won. He got 7 goals and 8 assists throughout the tournament.
North Korea started the tournament in style with 9-4 win over Georgia but then lost the rest of the games to relegate to Division 3A.
