The Philippines, without their suspended captain, won the first ever Southeast Asian Games gold medals.

On August 24 2017 The Philippines beat Thailand to win the first ever Southeast Games ice hockey tournament. The tournament was played at the Empire City Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and on the final day the two undefeated teams Philippines and Thailand played for the gold medals.

The Philippines got a 4-0 lead after 25 minutes but allowed Thailand to get back to 4-3 before the second period. Jose Iñigo Cadiz scored the tournament winning goal at 50:59 though. Thailand scored once again but never tied the game. Philippines won 5-4.
