Kouvola will become a member of the elite league in Finland next season after they were denied this year despite winning the Mestis championship.
The Finnish league will expand to 15 teams next year. This has now been made official. KooKoo Kouvola has been accepted to play in Liiga as of fall 2015. The economic plans have been approved and the club’s budget will rise to 3.5 million Euros next season of which 1.8 million will be awarded to the player budget. KooKoo aims at an average attendance of 3.500 spectators.
This move will also end discussions about the way the league decided to fill in the spot that was left open before this year’s season by Jokerit Helsinki, which left to play in the KHL. KooKoo won the Mestis championship last year, but the last spot in Liiga went to Vaasan Sport as they had the better business plan. Now KooKoo will get the promotion they fought for on the ice last year with a one year delay.
