Lev and Slovan disillusioned in Russia

Lev and Slovan disillusioned in Russia

A so far succesful first month in KHL ends with a road trip for the two newcomers that bring them down to earth

With their second home win in a row Avangard Omsk is back in business in Chernyshyov Division. Against their direct competitors Amur Khabarovsk they gained a solid 4-1. The guests could only stay at the same level in the first period when Alexander Osipov tied the Avangard lead through Dmitry Syomin. In teh middle period Semyon Zherebtsov and Alexander Perezhogin pathed the way for the Omsk success and with a couple of minutes to go Alexander Nesterov even added another one. Avangard stays last in their division but they are now only three points behind the second place.

That second place in Chernyshyov Division is taken by Metallurg Novokuznetsk with 16 points. First it looked like Kazakh side Barys Astana could continue with their strong performances of the last weeks as Nigel Dawes used a power play at 15:00 but then Metallurg ran away with five consecutive strikes, scored by Alexander Bumagin (2), Dmitry Chernikh, Vadim Mitryakov and Alexei Yefimov. Barys never found back into the game.

Another match that was pretty one-sided was the one between Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg and CSKA Moscow. The guests scored in every period to gain a solid 3-0 away win with goals by Evgeny Ryasensky, Denis Denisov and Igor Radulov. The other Radulov brother Alexander earned two assists, both in power play situations. Rastislav Stana between the CSKA posts had a 22 save shutout - his second in the last three games.

Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk continues their terrible season. At home against Sibir they received their ninth loss in their tenth match. And that despite showing a great reaction today. Swede Jonas Enlund had opened the score for Sibir already after 43 seconds but within the next ten minutes Igor Skorokhodov and Stanislav Bocharov had turned the result around in favor of Yugra. With the begin of the second period Kristian Kudroc scored the equalizer for Novosibirsk and Yugra was lucky that their opponents wasted so many good opportunities. In the end the shootout had to decide and as last shooter Finnish forward Jori Lehterä scored in the fifth round against Yugra goalie Mikhail Biryukov - as the only scorer - and gave Sibir the extra point.

The two Russian super powers Dynamo Moscow and Salavat Yulayev Ufa faced today with the better end for Dynamo. A double by Igor Mirnov and Denis Khlystov in the 12th minute was not enough for the guests to win the game. Filip Novak, Denis Kokarev and Marek Kvapil turned the resulta round completely before a strike by Miroslav Blatak in the 57th minute brought the late equalizer for Ufa. In a long shootout Marek Kvapil won the extra point for Dynamo. NHL's lockout star forward Alexander Ovechkin was stopped twice by Iiro Tarkki.

Their second road trip isn't too succesful for newcomers Lev Prague and Slovan Bratislava. Both sides have gained the same amount of points in the last two games - zero. As Lev is facing Slovan's opponents one game prior it's a bit easier for the Slovakians to estimate the other teams. Today Michal Repik and Erik Christensen earned a lead twice for Lev in Chelyabinsk but Traktor came back with goals by Konstantin Panov and Andrei Kostitsyn still in the first period. When Vladimir Antipov scored a shorthander at 39:12 the game changed into the favor of Traktor. Maxim Yakutsenya and Jan Bulis let no doubts arise, making it 5-2 in the last period.

After the 6-1 loss off Lev in Magnitogorsk, Slovan was warned. They kept the game close against the star squad of Metallurg but lay behind with two goals, scored by Enver Lisin and Sergei Mozyakin in the first two periods. Within a minute in the third Libor Hudacek and Andrej Stastny tied the game for Slovan that showed a lot of heart but in the end Mikhail Yakubov won the game for Metallurg at 53:13.
