10 Aug 2011 | Henrik Lundqvist
Tomorrow, Thursday, starts the European Trophy. The prestigeous pre-season tournament with many of the European top teams. Last year's champion Eisbären Berlin of Germany starts with an away game to Frölunda in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The number of teams in the European trophy increased from 18 to 24 this season.
There are four groups with six teams in each group. The two top-teams in each group, including Red Bull Salzburg - who will take the playoff place of the second placed team in all groups with the least amount of points should they fail to qualify - will go to Salzburg and Vienna on December 16-18 for the Red Bulls Salute, the play-off.
Tomorrow starts the 2011 European Trophy with seven games:
HC Slovan Bratislava - KalPa
HC Sparta Praha - HV71
Frölunda Indians - Eisbären Berlin
Färjestads BK - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Djurgårdens IF - HC Slavia Praha
HC ČSOB Pojišťovna Pardubice - Linköpings HC
Vienna Capitals - Oulun Kärpät
Eisbären Berlin won the Trophy last year after beating Swedish HV71 in the final. They will start this year also against a Swedish team. Eisbären traveled to Gothenburg to play Frölunda. "Our goal is to defend the title," says Eisbären head coach Don Jackson
