A dominant performance at the TEP Showcase in Toronto,
Ontario saw the German select team defeat Jamaica easily 7-1 on Friday night to
finish off the first full day of competition.
Despite some good chances by Jamaica early in the contest,
Germany would dominate the first period. Germany’s roster featured prospects
playing in German junior leagues, while Jamaica was made up of players from
local Canadian tier two hockey leagues in Ontario.
Germany’s Valentin Busch got his country on the board first
after knocking in a rebound off of Lars Schiller’s point shot that went off the
end boards and back in front, beating Jamaican netminder Adam Wisco on the left
side to make it 1-0.
Then, two minutes later, Germany scored yet again. Luca
Glaser found the loose puck off a Jamaican defender and fired a quick shot past
Wisco, beating him over his glove to make it 2-0.
With 1:35 left in the first, Germany took a commanding 3-0
lead. This time, Maximilan Adam's shot whisked past Wisco, using a pass from
Tom Knobloch effectively before sending it off quickly into the net.
Things weren’t going well for Jamaica, who would surrender a
fourth straight goal. At 3:49, Charly Jahnke somehow managed to beat Wisco on a
shorthanded floater, going up high to make it 4-0 with most of the game still
to go.
13:42 remaining in the game, Jamaica finally got on the
board for the first of the game. The team showed some solid pressure early on
before eventually having Carter Thorton fire a shot from the left faceoff
circle past Patrick Berger and in to make 4-1, giving the team just a bit of
life.
With nine minutes left, Germany scored their second
shorthanded goal of the game. It wasn’t as easy this time, but Fabian Koziol
jammed one in close to make it 5-1. Nic Kalpouzos would beat Wisco blocker side
with just over six minutes to go before Nocan Regan finished off the game in
the final minute, giving Germany the final 7-1 victory.
Jamaica has two games to play on Saturday, starting the day
off with a 12:30 PM game against NHD before meeting the Rayside Balfour
Canadians to finish off the tournament at 5:30 PM.
Earlier in the day, Jamaica easily defeated the Midland
Flyers 5-1 to start the tournament. The game was dominated by special teams,
with Dante Jones’ goal proving to be the only one that wasn’t on the power play
or penalty kill. St. Michaels Buzzers star Cameron Searles was the talk of the
game, scoring shorthanded and on the power play to record two goals in the
victory.
