Seventh heaven for Sheffield

Seventh heaven for Sheffield

Just days after falling in a shootout to the Cardiff Devils in South Wales, the Sheffield Steelers returned home to face the Devils in a very different encounter.

It was the second game in as many days for the Steelers who fell 6 - 4 to the Panthers the night before in the second leg of their Challenge Cup Semi-Final, the Steelers faced the Cardiff Devils with a win moving them level on points with second place Braehead Clan.

The first goal of the game came from Devils defenseman Tyson Marsh, scoring his eighth of the year at 15.22 to give the visitors the lead, but it wasn't even 90 seconds in when the Steelers replied.

Former Devil Chris Blight notched his first goal as a Steeler against his former employers and it was the start of a special night for Sheffield.

No more scoring in the first meant the teams were tied at 1 after 20 minutes and close to even on shots, but it would all change in the second.

Rupert Quiney gave the Steelers their first powerplay of the game, sitting for the Devils for two minutes for tripping, giving Stefan Meyer the chance to score his 24th of the year on the powerplay, giving Sheffield a 2 - 1 lead.

Less than 90 seconds later and it was 3 - 1, Maxime Lacroix was next on the scoreboard, fourteen seconds later the rout continued, Jeff Legue made it 4 - 1 with over half the game still to play.

Sheffield were unable to add another quick one, but their next goal came just over three minutes later through Lacroix's second of the net, with Chris Blight picking up his second assist and third point against his former team.

Tim Spencer was next on hand to go 6 - 1 up before Jason Hewitt picked up a milestone with his 100th EIHL goal to finish the scoring off for the period and game with Sheffield picking up a 7 - 1 win and two vital points in their charge for second place.

Elsewhere the results favored the Steelers but not the Devils. The Hull Stingrays picked up two points in a 6 - 4 victory over the Braehead Clan, moving the Stingrays three points ahead of the Devils and keeping Braehead on 50 points allowing Sheffield to draw level on points.
