Fife Flyers cause an upset in Sheffield

26 Oct 2013 | Ollie Hampson

The Fife Flyers began their road trip weekend with a vist to Ice Sheffield to face the Steelers, coming away with a surprising two points.

Grabbing an early goal is key for any road team, so when Jordan Fulton scored the opening goal of the game with 2.50 played, it set the Flyers on the way, quietening the home crowd.

Sheffield pushed on, trying to regain the tie but Bobby Chaumont made it harder with the Flyers second of the game at 14.23, the final goal of the first period giving the Flyers a 2 - 0 lead despite being outshot 14 - 7.

Sheffield came out strong in the second and Chris Wands was called for interference, giving the Steelers a powerplay opportunity and Rob Dowd clawed the Steelers back into the game with his seventh goal of the year, making it 2 - 1 with over half the game to play.

However Bobby Chaumont and the Flyers had other plans for a Steelers comeback as less than a minute later, Fife were up by two again thanks to Chaumonts second of the game and fifth of the year.

After 40 minutes of play, two goals separated the sides with the Steelers edging the shots with a 22 - 15 advantage, but only one goal to show for it.

An even third only produced one goal, Jonathan Phillips clawed the game back to a one goal game with the Steelers second, but it the comeback wasn't to be as the Fife Flyers picked up a surprising win, just their second of the season after a 4 - 3 victory over the Edinburgh Capitals last season.

Fife will now travel to Cardiff tomorrow to face the Devils who look on track to turn their early season struggles around, while Sheffield will travel to Coventry to face the Blaze who have shown a lot of promise as of late.

Elsewhere in the league another upset was handed out as the Coventry Blaze took last years champions, the Nottingham Panthers all the way to a shootout, emerging with a 5 - 4 victory with Adam Henrich getting the only goal of the shootout.
