Finnish SM-liiga team Jokerit from Helsinki will join KHL in season 2014-15. This news was released today in Helsinki by Jokerit's owner Harry Harkimo.
Jokerit's home arena Hartwall arena was sold to a Russian Gennadi Timtshenko and Rotenberg family. They will also have an option to buy a part of Jokerit later. For now Harry Harkimo remains as a main owner of Jokerit. In the same deal was agreed that Jokerit will join KHL league starting from season 2014-15. Interesting part is that Rotenberg family is strongly involved also with SKA St. Petersburg.
This is a blockbuster news for Finnish SM-liiga and Finnish icehockey. It remains to be seen what it means for the league and also it will be interesting to see how will Jokerit fans react on this. Others see this as a new start for an interesting era but on the other hand when you are used to see for example matchups against local rival HIFK and now you will see matches against Barys Astana or Zagreb or Avtomobilist Jekaterinburg, how interesting will they see these kind of matches.
