Norway defeated Slovenia 3-1 in the opening game of the EIHC tournament in Belarus. Røymark, Forsberg and Bastiansen scored for the winners and goalie Pål Grotnes made 26 saves. Rok Ticar scored for Slovenia.

Defenseman Lukas Krajicek of Ocelari Trinec, who is considered to have the highest salary in Czech Tipsport Extraliga, revealed in an interview for iDnes.cz that he earns 600 000 CZK per month (€ 24,000). The salaries in Czech Extraliga remain unrevealed. Krajicek has played 328 games in NHL and in the last season he played the Stanley Cup finals with the Flyers. He is rumored to move to Ak-Bars Kazan soon.

Steve Walker retired after last season but has now decided to put on the Eisbären Berlin dress again. The 37-year-old attacker has signed a contract until the end of the season. In ten years with Berlin, Walker played 556 games in the DEL and scored 206 goals and 355 assists.

Former head coach of the Swedish national team Bengt-Åke Gustafsson is the new head coach of Swiss club ZSC Lions from Zürich. After signing Gustafsson the club also signed former NHL-star Owen Nolan to their roster.

50 year-old Italian/Canadian Luciano Basile is new head coach of the Spanish National team.
Basile is currently coach at Briançon, France Ligue Magnus. He previously coached Spanish team Majadahonda and won the championship in 1997.
For the past two season he's been awarded best coach of Ligue Magnus. Prior to this he worked in Italian Varese and Asiago.

Russian Andrei Khomutov was appointed as the new coach of Kazakhstan national team. Khomutov's ambition, currently being head coach of KHL's Barys Astana, is to try to win the Asian Winter Games, hosted by Kazakhstan in February, and to bring the team back into the Elite division during the IHWC Division I in Kyiv next spring.
Aleksandr Maltsev is the new head coach of the womens' team.
The Federation created a department to develop junior hockey. Former player Aleksandr Koreshkov is the appointed director of this pioneering department.

Vladimir Belayev was fired from his position as coach of Kazzinc Torpedo Ust Kamenogorskhead. The club's vice-president Yuri Petukhov commented: "Vladimir is a good man and a very good coach, but unfortunately, under his leadership the team failed to meet the goals we set". Former coach of champion Sary-Arka Oleg Bolyakin is the new coach.

Slovak coach Peter Oppitz leaves Spanish team CG Puigcerdà and signs with ambitious 2nd Division team Las Encinas de Boadilla from Madrid. Delay in payments and a better economic offer persuaded Oppitz to leave the Pyrenaic team. In five seasons under his command Puigcerdà won 3 leagues and 4 National Cups. Puigcerdà managment will soon announce who will be the new coach, probably a player\coach.

Today the Kazakhstan Hockey Federation confirmed sanctions against Ertis Pavlodar for leaving the ice at 59:02 during a game versus Sary Arka Karaganda, alleging a double major penalty decided by the referee was an unacceptable mistake. Sary Arka won the game 5-0.
