Coventry Blaze earned their first league win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Glasgow Clan, who came into the fixture as league leaders, at the Skydome on Sunday night.
"For us it was good to get back in the win column," said Blaze forward Matthew Gleason. "It wasn't the prettiest game from us, but we found a way to win. Getting into a two-goal lead was big for us as we'd been down a lot in games, but finding a way to win is huge for us."
The opening goal came just past the six-minute mark while the Blaze were shorthanded. Grayson Constable and Connor Russell combined on a quick passing play in front of the net, with Constable finishing the move to beat Lucas Brine and put the hosts ahead.
Coventry had further chances shorthanded later in the period, but Clan goaltender Brine was sharp, notably diving out of his crease to deny Constable and Gleason from scoring a second shorthanded goal.
"It was a tough one for us tonight. I don't think we had a full 60," admitted Clan forward Brett Neumann. "We had a slow start, not the quick one we wanted, and only really started playing in the third. It's unfortunate we didn't do that for the full game, but it’s a learning for us that we have to get off to quicker starts."
Coventry doubled their lead less than two minutes into the second period when Grant Mismash wrapped the puck around from behind the net and tucked it home.
"The big thing is to trust the process," added Gleason. "We had a hot start winning close games, but every team goes through a slump here and there. Our team was making small mistakes, and the biggest thing for us was to get back to basics - understanding our identity and systems. We only gave up one goal tonight, whereas in previous games we’d been giving up more than that in a first period. Coming together, minimising mistakes, and getting back to our game helped us get that win."
Clan pushed late in the second, with Hugo Roy coming closest to getting them on the board, but his tap-in chance at the back post went narrowly wide.
Neumann beat Robson 3:37 into the third period to pull Clan back within one, but that was as much as the visitors could manage. Brine was pulled for the extra skater with 94 seconds remaining, but the Blaze held firm to take both points.
"We have to take it one game at a time. We've shown that we can beat anyone, but it's just that consistency we need," added Neumann. "This is a good league, there's a lot of great hockey. I'm happy to be back and it's been a lot of fun so far."
