Nottingham Panthers earned two important league points on the road with a 5-2 win over Dundee Stars on Saturday night, led by a strong performance from former Stars netminder Kevin Carr.
“I thought we were really good all over the ice," began Carr. "We dominated a lot of the game in the offensive zone and defensively we were really sound, so when that happens usually a good result follows. They’ve got a lot of tenacity over there, so this was a good win for us and a big one over a former team.”
The visitors opened the scoring at 11:53 when Brendan Harris fired home a rebound after Cooper Zech’s initial shot was saved by Emil Kruse. Two minutes later, the Panthers doubled their lead on the powerplay as Mitch Fossier blasted a one-timer from the slot past Kruse at 13:19.
“It was pretty awful, they were playing in our end which was tough and we didn’t have the coverage to play with the puck," admitted current Star and former Panther Otto Nieminen. "We were just running behind them in the first then in the second we were way better and it was tight. Third period it was also tight but it was small margins and they deserved the win tonight.”
Griffin Luce got Dundee on the board midway through the second, his shot from the blue line finding its way past Carr at 25:56. Otto Nieminen then tied the game against his former team, reacting quickest to a loose puck on the powerplay at 38:12.
The Panthers regrouped in the final period and retook the lead early. Didrik Henbrant followed up his own rebound to make it 3-2 at 42:15, before Fossier grabbed his second of the night at 51:39, evading a defender and backhanding the puck past Kruse.
Dundee pressed late and had a 5-on-3 powerplay opportunity, but Carr stood firm in goal. Henbrant added an empty-netter to seal the 5-2 win for Nottingham.
“It feels good anytime you can get a win over a former team. It’s awesome to be back here – the fans are great and the people here are amazing," added Carr. “It’s a full-circle moment for me. I’m very fortunate to be on this team and excited to see where the season goes for us.”
