Sheffield Steelers put in a dominant first-period display to power past Coventry Blaze 6-1 at the Skydome on Saturday night.
"I thought we came out sticking to our game plan and executed it really well," said hat trick hero Mitchell Balmas. "Our special teams were excellent tonight - we scored on the penalty kill, on the powerplay, and another just after. We're rolling right now and need to stick to it."
The visitors exploded out of the blocks, taking a four-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Balmas opened the scoring at 3:38, tipping in Brian Diffley’s pass to beat Mat Robson, before Robert Dowd doubled the advantage at 8:35 with another deflection from close range.
“Of course it’s not the result we wanted,” said Blaze captain Kim Tallberg. “It’s a big disappointment but we have some positives we can take out to take with us into the next games. For sure though we have some things we need to make better."
Balmas struck again midway through the period, blocking a shot in his own zone before breaking away and finishing his chance for 3-0. Cliff Pu then added a fourth shorthanded with 2:24 left in the frame, intercepting a pass and slotting home one-on-one.
Coventry replaced Robson with Dershahn Stewart in goal to start the second period and generated more pressure, but Matt Greenfield stood tall between the pipes to maintain the shutout.
Balmas completed his hat trick late in the middle frame, firing high past Stewart on the powerplay at 38:30 to make it 5-0. "It's always nice to be able to contribute to the team and help get the job done," said Balmas of his three goals, celebrated by a large travelling support from Sheffield. "Our fans are awesome - whether we're at home or on the road, they travel, support us, and are a big part of our organisation."
Stephen Harper made it six for the Steelers just 2:45 into period three, while Grayson Constable picked up a late consolation for the Blaze with just under seven minutes remaining.
“We need to be harder in front of their net, and score what we call ‘dirty goals’” admitted Tallberg. “We need to put more pucks to the net and be more hungry when we get there.”
