Guildford Flames ended their week on a high, claiming a 3-2 overtime win over the Glasgow Clan at the Spectrum thanks to Tyler Busch’s winner just 69 seconds into the extra frame.
The opening period saw chances at both ends, but it was Glasgow who struck first. Just past the 10-minute mark, a quick transition left Guildford defending a 2-on-1. Rylan Schwartz slid the puck across to Brett Neumann, who fired over Justin Fazio’s shoulder to make it 1-0.
Five minutes later, Guildford replied when Ethan Strang started a breakout from his own zone and fed Busch, who set up Jake Coughler to slide the puck through Sami Aittokallio’s pads for 1-1. However, in the final minute of the frame, Nick Seitz lost possession in his own zone, allowing Brayden Burke to feed Deven Sideroff, who restored the visitors’ lead with a neat finish past Fazio.
The Flames came out firing in the second, levelling the game just 47 seconds in when Busch struck from the faceoff circle to make it 2-2. “We found a way to win,” said Busch post-game. “It wasn’t the prettiest effort, but getting the points was the most important thing for us.”
Both teams traded chances as the intensity ramped up, but neither could find a way through in the second or third periods. Fazio denied Josh Nixon on a shorthanded breakaway late on, while Clan hit the crossbar during a spell of sustained pressure but couldn’t beat the Guildford netminder.
In overtime, the Flames broke away 2-on-0, with Nixon feeding Busch, who calmly finished to secure the win. “It was a quick transition that left us with a 2-on-0,” said Busch. “It was a nice pass from Josh - I just made a move on the goalie and put it in.”
Reflecting on the team’s improving health, Busch added: “We had some really important players back, including our captain, so it was nice to have more of a normal line-up. We’ve been battling for a while, so it was good to get some faces back.”
Despite the loss, Schwartz praised his side’s effort: “I think we had our chances, so did they, but we were getting tired towards the end after the long travel day. We battled to the end and got a point - it was a good effort.”
