Game recap

Cardiff stayed top of the Elite League thanks to a late show in Guildford, before the Flames came back in the shootout to win 4-3.

After a very even opening period, Ben Davies put the Devils ahead with a powerplay goal from close range at 21:25. With the period then running down, Brett Ferguson came out of the penalty box to race through on a breakaway – the shot was saved by Ben Bowns but the rebound bounced into the air and over the Devils’ netminder into the net. The Flames then two ahead after 40 minutes.

When Brett Ferguson hit home a rebound with 8:26 to go on delayed penalty, the Flames looked to be heading to an important win over the league leaders. Devils’ Head Coach Andrew Lord rolled the dice and pulled Bowns with three minutes to go, and was to be rewarded – Mike Hedden eventually got the visitors on the board at 57:33. With Bowns still out, the Devils then brought the score back to 3-2 with 1:08 to go as he latched on to a loose puck around the net; and then the almost unthinkable happened as Joey Martin bundled the puck over the line with only 36 seconds left to play.

No goals in overtime saw the game decided in a shootout, and it took until Round 6 to finish things – Calle Ackered scored his second of the night in the shootout with another fantastic move, while Hedden missing meant the Flames took the extra point.
