Tage Thompson’s OT winner gives USA the first WC gold in 92 years
26 May 2025 | Fredrik Pålsson
For the first time since 1933 Team USA won the gold at the World Championship.
Switzerland made a very good tournament lead by Leonardo Genoni in goal. Genoni was great and selected MVP after closing the goal for over four hours of play. That gave Switzerland hopes of their first goal but another Genoni shutout during regular time wasn't enough as the game ended 0-0. And only 2:02 into the overtime Tage Thompson scored the golden goal that made USA historic with their first goal since 1933.
In the bronze medal game Sweden saved some of their pride on by beating Denmark 6-2. Sweden who had dreams of gold on home ice but didn't stood a chance in the semi final in USA after a really bad effort. For the Danes there were no first historic medal after their surprising quarter final win against Canada. They lost the semi final 0-7 to Switzerland and even if they made a stronger effort in the bronze game it was never really close for them.
