Continental Cup Group A: day 2 recap
Irbis-Skate Sofia - Crvena Zvezda Belgrade 1-6 (0-4;1-1;0-1)
Crvena Zvezda secured their first points in the Continental Cup, defeating the host team, Irbis-Skate Sofia, with a commanding 6-1 victory. After suffering a defeat on the opening day against Liège, the Serbian side responded with a dominant performance, essentially sealing the game by the end of the first period with a 4-0 lead.
Despite missing key players, Crvena Zvezda outclassed the Bulgarian team, who struggled to match their level. Irbis-Skate once again leaned heavily on their goaltending duo of Dimitar Dimitrov and Teodor Asenov, who managed to prevent an even more lopsided scoreline. Nevertheless, the skill gap was evident, as Crvena Zvezda controlled the game with superior tactics and individual performances.
Leading the way for Crvena Zvezda was forward Vuk Kravljanac, who had a standout game, registering two goals and one assist. His efforts, along with a goal and two assists from Marko Dragović, kept the pressure on Irbis-Skate throughout the game. The Bulgarian side’s only consolation came from Miroslav Vasiliev, who scored in the second period to bring the score to 5-1.
Crvena Zvezda could rue their missed opportunity from the previous day's loss, as it prevents them from advancing further in the tournament despite their impressive performance against Sofia. For Irbis-Skate, their defense, especially the performances of goalies Dimitrov and Asenov, remained their strong point, but their overall play was unable to match their more experienced opponents.
KHL Sisak - Bulldogs Liege 6-1 (3-0,2-1,1-0)
After a dominant victory over Irbis Sofia, KHL Sisak cruised past the Liège Bulldogs, securing a spot in the second round of the Continental Cup with a game to spare. The Belgian team struggled to keep up with the Croatian side, only managing to compete when Sisak slowed the pace, which could be a potential weakness when facing stronger opponents in future matches. Despite this, Sisak’s current level was more than enough to comfortably dispatch their opponents in Sofia.
The game was effectively decided within the first 10 minutes. Karlo Marinkovic opened the scoring with a tap-in, followed by two power play goals from Dominik Čanić and Bruno Idžan, making it 3-0 by the end of the first period. Sisak extended their lead in the second period, with goals from Carson Brière and Vito Idžan, though a string of penalties disrupted the flow of play. Liège managed to score a consolation goal through Yoren De Smet, which the Belgians celebrated enthusiastically. In the final period, the game slowed significantly, with Sisak content to maintain their lead, adding one more goal from Brière to seal a 6-1 victory.
Despite the heavy penalty count, Sisak controlled the game throughout and will now turn their focus to the second round of the Continental Cup in Collalbo, Italy, scheduled for October. Meanwhile, Liège will need to regroup after being thoroughly outclassed.
