Continental Cup Superfinals Day 1 recap

Continental Cup Superfinals Day 1 recap

13 Jan 2023 | Nino Maldinez

The 25th edition of the Continental Cup celebrates its Superfinals. In Angers, the decisive clash will be played this weekend between the local team Ducs d' Angers, Cardiff Devils, HK Nitra and Asiago.

To launch the hostilities, HK Nitra receives Asiago. If the Italian fans are heard in the stands,it is indeed the Slovaks who dominate the debates. Quickly in the lead thanks to a goal from Sebastian Cederle (07’00) and another from Jakub Lacka (09’09), the sporting logic was respected in the first third. Asiago wanted to reduce the score at the end of the period, but the goal was refused for interference.
Better back from the locker room, Asiago put in difficulty this team of Nitra and comes back in the game thanks to a goal of Nicholas Saracino. The celebrations are only of short duration since it takes only a little more than one minute to see the designated local ones taking again two goals of advance thanks to a goal signed by Tomas Hrnka. The Slovaks impose their game in this second third and add a fourth goal at the end of the period, thanks to a goal by Jurak Pekarcik in counter attack. This third period is not without its twists and turns. After a quick attack, Allan McShane found the back of the net and reduced the score with 10 minutes left in regulation. On the power play, Asiago cut the deficit once again thanks to Bryce Misley’s goal. The Italians dominated the end of the game and had a chance to equalize with another power play. But the Nitra players held on and took advantage of the Italian goalkeeper' s exit to seal the win as Filip Krivosik scored in the empty net. Final score Nitra 5-3 Asiago.

The other game of the evening pits the local Ducs d' Angers against Cardiff Devils. In a match where the atmosphere is as high as the stakes, the teams are present. Each of them had their strongest moment. The Angevins are the first to strike. Philippe Halley takes advantage of the loss of balance of the defender to attack the paint. He tries his luck and finds the back of the net, leaving Ben Bowns stunned (12'44). Cardiff pushes and puts Evan Cowley under the spotlight, but without being able to equalize at the end of the first twenty minutes.

After the break, the battle resumed. Ryan Penny leads the charge for the Devils who try to break the Angevin lock. Despite several numerical surges, the Welsh could not find the breakthrough in an Angevin defensive sector that stood like the walls of its city. After this second period of play, the score remained the same, one goal to nothing in favor of the locals.

Quickly in this last period, things change. The Frenchman Kévin Dusseau offers a gift fallen from the sky by releasing in front of his cage, empty. Brodie Reid doesn' need more to put the two teams back to back (41:49). The debates are balanced until the end of regulation time. The Angevins push, occupy the offensive zone but nothing will prevent this game to go to overtime.
The Devils are the most prominent in this overtime. Evan Cowley has to do whatever it takes to keep the Reds from winning. But nothing happens and the game goes to a penalty shootout. Evan Cowley made his talent known to the Welsh forwards and Angers won the penalty shootout under the cheering of the ice rink.
