USA out-shot Austria 32-13 andgot the important opening 5-1 win.

 
 
 
 
USA won the game 5-1 on goals by five different players. Chris Kreider scored 1-0 and Blake Wheeler added 2-0 from a sharp angle in the first period.

Austria's Marco Pewal gave the European's some hope when he made it 2-1 at 34:00 but Yan Stastny restored the American 2-goal lead a few minutes later.

Kevin Shattenkirk added a 4-1 goal at 42:47 and in the final minutes Craig Smith scored a power-play goal for 5-1.

"The Americans did not have many scoring chances. Unfortunateky they scored on the", said Austrian forward Oliver Setzinger.

The game didn't see many penalties. USA played on power-play for 4:44 and Austria for 6:49.
