Gothenburg and Helsinki to host NHL games
22 Jul 2018 | Fredrik Pålsson
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid will make his NHL 2018-19 debut in Europe.
Meanwhile,
fans in the U.S. will be able to enjoy two outdoor games in the schedule that was released on June 21.
The New
Jersey Devils will open the season against the Oilers in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The Winnipeg Jets take on the Florida Panthers on November 1-2 in two meetings
in Helsinki. The Chicago Blackhawks will play the Boston Bruins at the
University of Notre Dame in Indiana on New Year’s Day in the NHL Winter
Classic. The season’s second outdoor game will see the Pittsburgh Penguins
visit rivals Philadelphia Flyers on February 23. It will take place at the
Philadelphia Eagles Lincoln Financial Stadium.
Vegas gets early rematch
Stanley Cup
holders the Washington Capitals will welcome Boston on the season’s opening
night on October 3. The team who lost in the final of the Cup, the Vegas Golden
Knights, will then face a rematch against the Capitals in Washington on October
10.
Capitals
fans will be particularly interested in the team’s November 26 game against the
New York Islanders. It will be Washington’s first meeting against their
one-time coach Barry Trotz. The coach recently left the capital state after he
and his former team failed to agree terms on a new contract. Three days after
his exit, Trotz joined the Islanders. The New York team will visit the Capitals
on January 18. They will face off again on the final day of the season on April
6.
More opening night
matchups
The opening
night will also feature Anaheim vs San Jose, Calgary vs Vancouver, and Montreal
vs Toronto. Each team will play through an 82-game schedule, with all but one
of the 31 teams playing on the final day.
The Florida
Panthers and Anaheim Ducks will be celebrating 25 years in the
NHL. Tampa Bay will play host to the Panthers on October 6, 25 years to the day
after they tied their first NHL game 4-4 against the Chicago. Anaheim will host
Detroit on October 8, 25 years after their NHL debut against the very same
team. The Mighty Ducks lost that game 7-2.
More NHL for Euro fans
European
fans have something to get excited about with two NHL games crossing the
Atlantic. Those who like watching the NHL on television will also be able to
enjoy the rest of the exciting schedule. When you add Fantasy Hockey to the
mix, they have something even more to look forward to. Betting in hockey is
also becoming an increasingly popular pastime. There are more and more ways to
bet on the game, including in-play betting. Live betting
on sites such as Mr Green has become increasingly popular. The majority of live
bets are placed on the match winner, due to the game’s back-and-forth style.
The season
will take a break between January 24 and January 27 for the NHL All-Star game.
The annual event will take place in San Jose on January 26. Each of the four
divisions will be represented in three 20-minute 3-on-3 tournament-style games.
Canada will
celebrate Hockey Day on February 9, with games featuring each of the seven NHL
Canadian teams. American’s Hockey Day takes place on February 17, with six
games scheduled to celebrate the occasion.
