For the fifth year in row Team Canada loses in quarter-finals
Quarter-Finals
Canada 2 Finland 3
Canada made an ugly finish this night at World Championships. For 40 minutes the idea of the game was that Canada would end up winning the game and for the first time in five years pass the quarter-finals stage. But this was without counting with Team Finland's final effort.
One of the reasons why Canada didn't pull this game away early from Finland was the clumsy powerplay in the first period (four times) and Pekka Rinne (36 saves), one of the best goalies on the planet. He deserves every cent of his big salary. The first goal of the game was on Finland's side and came out in a powerplay situation. Tappara's player Olli Palola scored after a deflected shot made by Juuso Hietanen.
Team Canada didn't go down and continue to push and that, eventually, paid off. Forcing a turnover at the blue line, Kyle Turris scored after a tic-tac-toe play with Matt Read. Mark Scheifele, after a good combination with Joel Ward, scored the second goal. This goal was a copy of the first Canadian goal. Kontiola also lost the puck at the blueline. 40 minutes, 2-1 the score, 26-16 the shots. Canada had the "world" in their hands.
Just with 28 seconds elapsed in the third period Finland tied the game by Juuso Hietanen with a slapshot. Ben Scrivens could have done a better job in that goal. Team Canada doubt for the first time in the game and in this tournament. On the other hand, Team Finland started to believe they could win this game. The nordics shot more often at Ben Scrivens' net and in one of those situations they would be rewarded. Jori Lehtera stole the puck at the Canadian blueline and assisted to the young HIFK player Iiro Pakarinen for the game-wining goal. One more time Ben Scrivens wasn't fine the picture.
