Despite a proud hockey tradition, Slovak teams are out of Europe’s elite league. The numbers explain why. Read more»
A solid defensive performance gives Kloten a 3:1 win at home, lead series 3:2
The first period was underway and 5 minutes played, the Flyers and Davos
each a chance to score a first time on starting goalies Leonardo Genoni
and returning puck stopper Martin Gerber but neither team succeded. After receiving a 2 minute
minor for slashing Dino Wieser took place on the bench and Kloten's
powerplay formation quickly found a way to pass around the puck when Patrick von Gunten scored the first goal of
the game (6:05 played). Half of the period was played as Simon
Bodenmann was sent to the box for Hooking and Davos now had a chance to
set up their powerplay but the Flyers defense moved the puck out of
their zone time after time.
Next one to take a 2 minute break was Dario
Bürgler for Slashing but this time Kloten wasn't as powerful and a hard
time to find some connection and so they only managed one shot on goal.
With one minute to go, two Flyers were sent to the bench, the first
penalty came from Janick Steinman for Holding, while the game continued,
Philippe Schelling commited another foul (Slashing) and so Davos was
able to play with a 2 man advantage where Dario Bürgler scored the
equalising goal (Ville Koistinen, Perttu Lindgren) with one second left.
Davos started with a one-man advantage into the second period but
shortly after took a penalty for Tripping by Dario Bürgler. With 8
minutes played Davos was assessed with a minor penalty for too many men on the ice. It took the Flyers a while
to get organised but they were able to stay in the offensive zone even
as the penalty had ended and put the Capricorns under pressure but the
second goal still had to wait. Then Klotens Lukas Frick took place on
the bench for Holding the stick but no further goal was counted for
Davos either and so a goalless second period ended.
6 minutes into the 3rd period Dino Wieser sat down 2 minutes plus '10
for Boarding but the Flyers had trouble creating any kind of chances in
front of Genoni. 49 minutes were played, when Janick Steinmann scored
(Marcel Jenni, Lukas Stoop) to make the score 2:1 (48:09). A rush went
through the stands and seats at Kolping Arena (still known to most fans
as "Schluefweg") now that the home team had the chance to take the lead
in the series for the first time.
With 6 minutes to go, Klotens Jim
Vandermeer was assessed with a minor penalty for Tripping but the Flyers
boxplay solid and left Davos with 2 shots on goal. And with exactly 3
minutes left, Tommi Santala passed the puck to Jim Vandermeeer who
started a rush out of his own zone, curved around the Davos defense and
shot the puck in the top right corner to make it 3:1. With that, the
game was decided and Kloten has the chance with a win in Davos to
advance to the semifinals.
