  1. Canada handed Austria the worst defeat at the Olympic Winter Games in the modern era, with a score 23-0 result at the Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956. The Canadians scored a record-high 11 goals in the second period.
  2. The two teams have not met internationally since the 2004 world championship when Austria drew 2-2.
  3. Austria's best finish in the men's ice hockey tournament is joint-fifth and was established on debut in 1928 in St Moritz. Since then, Austria has never finished in the top six.
  4. Head coach Emanuel Viveiros and forward Brian Lebler are Canadian-born.
  5. Austria's last victory in an Olympic match dates back to 13 February, 2002, when it defeated Slovakia 3-2.
