Their amazing campaign at the 2013 World Championships has earned the Swiss national team and head coach Sean Simpson the Credit Suisse Sports Awards.
Swiss ice hockey has captured two awards at the Credit Suisse Sports Awards, an annual event organised by Credit Suisse in partnership with the Swiss Association of Sports Journalists and the Swiss Olympic Association to honour the top Swiss athletes of the year in various categories since 1950.
The head coach of the national team, Sean Simpson, was voted "Coach of the Year", beating out Ottmar Hitzfeld (football) and Guri Hetland (Nordic skiing), while the whole national team, the silver medalists in Stockholm during the last World Championship, was voted "Team of the Year", beating FC Basel and the Swiss national football team. Team captain Mathias Seger accepted the trophy on the team's behalf.
In addition to these two awards, Nashville Predators defenceman Roman Josi, who was MVP at the World Championship, finished third in the "Sportsman of the Year" category, trailing tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka and cross-country skier Dario Cologna.This was the first time in the history of the Sports Awards that an ice hockey player has been voted "Sportsman of the Year".
