Coming off a 3 – 2 loss to the Braehead Clan last night, the Coventry Blaze begin today with some big news.
After spending the last three months battling Guillain-Barré Syndrome, defenseman Mike Egener is set to return to the club after being passed fit to return by a neurologist.
Since receiving the good news that he can return to playing hockey, Egener hasn't just signed to finish this year with Coventry, but the 29 year old will remain with the Blaze through the 2014/15 season.
Egener is set to fly back to the UK next week in time to take on the Belfast Giants next weekend.
The Blaze with Egener last year enjoyed a good 2012/13 campaign where he registered 15 points in 56 games and established himself as a physical presence on the ice on a hard hitting Blaze team.
Speaking on the Blazes official website, Head Coach Matt Soderstrom stated
“I’m delighted Mike is coming back to us for so many reasons, It means that he’s healthy again, which we are all so pleased about, and it means that we get a superb player added to the line up. Everyone loves how he plays and everyone knows what he brings to this club. It will take him a little time to get back to full game fitness but he can’t wait to get started. He’s been through a very tough time and I know it’s going to be a special moment for him when he pulls on a Blaze shirt and takes his place in the line up again.
All the teams in the league are strong this season and anyone can beat anyone on any given night. When we get our injured players back, I really believe we are not far short of being a top team. The Directors have been fantastic in backing me to bring Mike back to the club – we are all committed to trying to be the best we can be and Mike rejoining us definitely takes us another step in that direction.”
Coventry are currently 6th in the EIHL with 12 games played and take on the Cardiff Devils and Hull Stingrays this weekend.
