The Cardiff Devils welcomed the Fife Flyers to the Cardiff Bay Arena for their only game of the weekend, a day after the Flyers upset the Sheffield Steelers in the first of their two away games.
Neither team really showed much to concern each other early in the game, a lot of end to end play with the defensive play proving too superior to bring any goals.
But that all changed when Andrew Conboy, known more for his fists showed what he's capable of after a nice rush set him up with a nice deke to fire home the shot to make it 1 - 0 with his first tally of the season.
Fife had the chance to equal the scores with a powerplay opportunity, but even a cross crease pass to Nickerson wouldn't find it's way past a sprawling Dan LaCosta who seems to have found his form after suffering two head injuries early this season.
The Devils then regained control of the game and with time running out, they extended their lead to 2 - 0 thanks to a goal from point producing defenseman Mark Richardson.
It was nearly 3 - 0 but the goal was disallowed after the net was knocked off. After 20 minutes the Devils led 2 - 0.
Less than two minutes into the second, the Flyers pulled one back, a good breakout for Fife led to ... Setting up ... With a cross crease opportunity that he buried with 21.49 played.
The Flyers than levelled the game quickly, after an icing call led to an offensive zone faceoff, Danny Stewart tapped in the rebound to make it 2 - 2 with plenty of time remaining.
The game was anything but end to end, it had periods of offensive pressure for both sides, and the Devils luckily escaped the Flyers onslaught to keep the scores at 2 - 2.
With just under 15 minutes played in the second, many in the Cardiff Bay Arena thought the Devils had gone 3 - 2 up but the sneaky glove of Kevin Regan had other ideas, robbing Tyson Marsh of what was a shot destined for the back of the net.
Despite the strong offensive efforts shown by the Devils in the second, before the period was out the Flyers would tally their third goal of the period through Derek Roehl, giving the Flyers a 3 - 2 lead going into the second period break.
The Devils tried relentlessly to draw level once more, but Kevin Regan was on fine form to keep them out, stopping shot after shot to keep his side ahead.
The Flyers came close to doubling their lead but they couldn't quite find the wide open net after some great offensive pressure to force a turnover, and as the puck was sent down the ice, the Flyers found themselves a man down for 2 minutes with 8.39 remaining in the game.
The Devils dominated the third period, having a lot of zone time, but with time winding down the Devils continued to search for an equaliser, and it finally came in the form of a snapshot and his second of the game from Mark Richardson, levelling the game at 3 - 3 with 1.54 remaining.
The late goal kept the Devils pressure up, but with Regan playing strong between the pipes, the teams went to overtime. After 5 minutes of Devils dominated overtime, the scores were still level at 3 so the teams went to a shootout.
The Flyers put the pressure on the Devils with Bobby Chaumont going bardown on the first shot, and Andrew Lord fumbled the puck and couldn't get the shot off cleanly on the Devils opening shot.
Rok Pajic went next for Fife but Dan LaCosta was able to turn him away, before Chris Blight levelled it at a goal each going into the third shots.
Tom Hartung was able to go upstairs on LaCosta to put all the pressure on Devils captain Mac Faulkner who saw Kevin Regan turn away his effort to give Fife the 4 - 3 shootout victory and complete a four point weekend.
