The 2013 World Championship was a great success for Sweden but the financial result for the 2012 and 2013 tournaments was a big disappointment for the Swedish Association.
The numbers won't be exact until August but at the Annual Meeting of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association it was announced that the financial loss is expected to be between 20 and 25 million SEK (around 2,300,000-2.900.000 EUR or 3.100.000 - 3.800.000 USD.
"The 2013 WC at home ice was a great success in sports winning the gold. But when we're calculating the financial result of the both home WC-tournaments 2012 and 2013 it's no success. In contrary it's a huge financial disappointment for us as organizers", said the chairman Christer Englund.
When Sweden organized the tournament in 2002 they made a big profit on the event but now there is a big loss despite more spectators at a higher price this time. There was an average of 5,500 spectators now compared with 5,400 in 2002, in total over 30,000 more spectators at significant higher price. "Compared with 2002 the costs for the event has increased with 65 million SEK. (about 7.500.000 EUR or 10.000.000 USD)", Englund says.
