New format of the Swedish playoffs
The Swedish top league changes format of the playoffs. Teams 7-10 in the standings will play pre-playoffs similar to the systems used in Finland, Germany and Czech Republic.
Only the six first teams of the Elitserien standings after 55 rounds will qualify for the quarter finals. Teams 7 will play team 10 and team 8 will play team 9 in pre-playoffs in best-of-3 series.
Another change is that now the highest placed teams can no longer choose opponent in the quarter finals. The best placed team will play the worst placed and so on.
"We want to add excitement and drama to the audience", says Jörgen Lindgren CEO of Svenska Hockeyligan.
"What we do in the first step is to create more games and get more competition in the playoffs".
