New European club competition in 2014/2015?
The IIHF and the top ice hockey clubs and leagues have started a joint venture with the goal to launch a European club competition.
Since the Champions Hockey League folded after just one season in 2008/2009 there has been no official European club competition for the best teams since the top countries don't participate in the Continental Cup.
In recent year and only an unofficial tournament the European Trophy has been played but now the plan is to close down the European Trophy and replace it with an official tournament with the current working game European Club Competition. The process started one year ago and the plan is to have the tournament up and running in 2014/2015.
Unlike the current European Trophy were teams are invited the participants of the new tournament is likely to qualify for the tournament by performance in the national leagues.
