Slovenia knew already before the game that not even a win against Canada would keep them in the top division. That didn't stop them from challenging the super stars.
Belarus hosts the next World Championship and can't get relegated so even if Slovenia would have won tonight's game and gotten past Belarus in the standings they would be relegated.
Slovenia still did all they could to beat Canada and got the game to overtime where Steven Stamkos beat Luka Gracnar for the winning goal.
Luka Gracnar had a busy night with 35 saves.

Jan Urbas shocked Canada with two goals in the first half of the opening period. Slovenia kept the lead until the 23rd minute when Canada scored two quick goals. Matt Duchene the first and Steven Stamkos the second. Five minutes later Slovenia managed to take back the lead again when Tomaz Razingar scored when he deflected a shot from Luka Tosic.
This time Slovenia could keep the lead for 20 minutes before Brenden Dillon tied it for Canada at 47:09.
For both teams this was the last game of the group stage. Slovenia finished last while Canada took over the lead from Switzerland. A lead they will lose again tomorrow if Switzerland gets at least one point against Belarus.
