New format for Women’s WC

The IIHF and USA Hockey today announced the schedule of the 2012 Womens' World Championship. The tournament will be played April 7-14 in Burlington, Vermont, USA and will be the first time that the tournament will be played with a new format that also will be used in the 2014 Olympics.
The Womens' World Championship will be played in a new format with two groups. In Group A, the top four seeded teams will play. Teams 1 and 2 from this group will qualify for the semi-finals, while teams 3 and 4 will play in the quarter-finals against the top two teams from group B, where teams seeded 5-8 will play. The bottom two teams in group B will play in a best of three relegation round series. This format will also be used for the Womens' Ice Hockey Tournament of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.
Canada, USA, Finland and Russia will play in Group A, while Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany (promoted) will play in Group B. Host-nation and reigning-champion USA will play rivals Canada on the opening day. This is the third time that the Women's World Championship will be played in the USA. Gutterson Fieldhouse (4 007 seats) will be the main arena of the tournament, while the second venue will be Cairns Arena (600 seats).

The quarter-finals will be played on April 11, the semi-finals on April 13 together with the 5th-place game. The final and bronze-medal game will be played on April 14. The relegation round will be played on April 11, 13 and 14. (Third game only if needed).
