There appears to be be three teams in the hunt for the title
As I mentioned last
month there are three teams in the race to be crowned EIHL champions in
March. The Cardiff Devils currently lead the trio with Belfast Giants currently
second and Sheffield Steelers in third place.
However, this doesn’t tell the whole story as they have not
all played an equal number of games. Should the Steelers win there four games
in hand over the Devils they would leap frog the Giants into second place.
Cardiff have had
a mixed month with an ending they would rather forget: they have lost their
last two games. But they did beat their rival Sheffield
twice in Wales
earlier in the month. In the game before they faced the Steelers Nottingham
Panthers pulled off a shock 8-0 win over them so one is left wondering as to
their appetite for the trophy.
Of the three front runners perhaps Belfast Giants are the
most improved. They are currently on a streak of eight wins and hold a 100% record
for December.
Although the Sheffield Steelers lost twice to title chasing Cardiff
they were solid throughout December and unbiased observers said they deserved
to come away from Cardiff with more
than just the one point (gained through overtime).
Edinburgh Capitals currently prop the league up but having
said that only eight points separate themselves and fourth placed club
Nottingham Panthers.
