In Örebro, Sweden got a great start against Finland when Nicklas Danielsson scored 1-0 after only 29 seconds. Niclas Burström made it 2-0 late in the second period and Johan Sundström 3-0 early in the third. But the Finns didn't stop playing and managed to get goals from Harri Personen and Mika Niemi before the game was over. The equalizer didn't come, and Sweden won 3-2. The teams play again on Saturday in Stockholm.

A young Russian team without most of their usual national team players lost a shootout game 3-2 to Czech Republic in Trinec. Lukas Krenzelok scored 1-0 at 3:43 and only 24 seconds later Sergei Shumakov tied it on a penalty shot. Roman Lyubimov took Russia ahead in the 43rd minute but Michal Repik tied it at 47:59. After a scoreless overtime period Lukas Kaspar and Tomas Vincour scored for the Czechs in the shootout while Russia's Sergei Shumakov and Nikita Gusev failed to beat the Czech goalie Dominik Furch. The second game between the teams will be played in Ostrava on Saturday.
