SATURDAY
It was an
amazing night of Elite League ice hockey with five thrilling matches producing
a hatful of goals.
Braehead Clan and Sheffield
Steelers shared a remarkable 16 goals in regulation time
with an 8-8 scoreline, before the Steelers went on to win the penalty shootout.
After Sheffield jumped into a 3-1 lead at the 10-minute mark,
the Clan ended the period leading 4-3.
Steelers
turned it around to go 5-4 in front but Braehead rallied and went 8-5
ahead.
Remarkably, Sheffield found a way back and scored three goals in six
third-period minutes to tie the game.
Sheffield netted
all three of their penalty shots and back-up netminder Brad Day – by this time
in nets for Marek Pinc – saved from former Steeler Stefan Meyer to help
complete a remarkable victory for Paul Thompson’s side with Chris Lawrence
getting the all important game winning penalty shot.

Nottingham Panthers closed the gap on leaders Belfast
to one point with a 4-0 victory over Coventry Blaze at the National Ice Centre.
Panthers
netminder Miika Wiikman turned away 20 shots to secure his first shutout for
the club.
Defenceman
Paul Swindlehurst scored twice – his first two goals for the club – while Juraj
Kolnik grabbed four assists and Andy Bohmbach added 1+3 in a convincing
victory.
Cardiff Devils had to come from behind in their 6-3 victory over Belfast Giants in the Big Blue Tent.
Giants led
2-1 at the end of the first period, but the hosts scored four straight in the
second session to turn the game around, including two goals in four minutes
from Joey Martin.
Mike Radja’s
second goal of the night closed the gap but the Devils saw the game out and are
now only a point behind leaders Belfast.
Manchester Storm secured their first away league win of the season as they beat Fife Flyers 3-1 in Kirkcaldy.
Pat Cullen
gave Fife a first-period lead but the visitors
roared back in the second.
Ricards
Birzinsh and Matt Paton scored within 90 seconds of each other to edge Manchester in front.
Matt Caria’s
12th goal of the season wrapped up the two points for the Storm.

There was a
five-goal thriller in at Dundee as Dundee Stars beat Edinburgh
Capitals 3-2
after overtime.
Sam
McCluskey’s short-handed goal put the hosts ahead, before Taylor Dickin and
David Rutherford edged the Capitals in front.
David Turon
levelled the game with 10 minutes remaining and Jason Gray won it for Dundee 57 seconds in the extra period.
SUNDAY
Nottingham Panthers moved to the top of the Elite League table with a 4-1 victory against
a lacklustre Sheffield
Steelers.
David Clarke
and Evan Mosey scored first-period goals to put Panthers in control.
Geoff Waugh
and Andy Bohmbach scored two minutes apart in period two, before Levi Nelson’s
strike broke Miika Wiikman’s shutout in the third period.

Cardiff Devils remain level on points with the Panthers – only behind on
results between the two sides – as they won 6-2 at Manchester
Storm.
Joey Haddad,
Andrew Lord, Gui Doucet and Tyson Marsh scored to open up a 4-0 lead for the
visitors.
Matt Paton
and Paul Phillips closed the gap, before Tomas Kurka and Doucet’s second
wrapped up victory for Cardiff.
Edinburgh Capitals won their seventh home game in a row, a record for them, as they
beat Fife
Flyers 4-2 in
Murrayfield.
Ryan Hayes
became the first player to 20 goals this season, while Craig McCallum and David
Rutherford also scored, as Capitals raced into a 3-0 lead.
Michael Dorr and Pat Cullen netted in
the third period to give Fife hope, but Hayes
grabbed his second into an empty net to seal his side’s win.
Coventry Blaze ended a five-game
losing streak in style with a 6-3 victory over Braehead
Clan at the
Skydome.
Jim Jorgenson and Brett Robinson scored
to put the Blaze 2-0 ahead, but Clan roared back through Alex Leavitt and
Thomas Nesbitt.
Robinson grabbed his second, with Mike
Quesnele and Jordan Pietrus also on target, as Coventry took control.
Chris Bruton reduced the deficit to two
but Jorgenson put the seal on the win with his second goal of the night.

Sunday
In Challenge Cup Group A, Dundee Stars won
3-2 at Belfast Giants after penalty shots.
Mike Radja and Derrick Walser gave Belfast a 2-0 first-period lead, before Dundee
hit back with strikes from Bobby Chaumont and Justin Faryna.
The shootout went to sudden death and
Craig Holland saved from Mike Forney, while Lou Dickenson scored to secure the
Stars the extra point.
