The start of 2015/16 SHL season is closing in and for upcoming season, there will be 14 teams competing for the trophy Le Mat. Reigning champions are Växjö Lakers. For the next 14 days, Eurohockey is presenting one team each day. In Part 1. we meet Brynäs IF.

Brynäs IF is one of the oldest (1912) and most successful teams in the history of Swedish hockey. Brynäs have won the gold medal thirteen times and the latest win came in 2011/12 season. Many known players such as Börje Salming, Tord Lundström, Mats Näslund, Stefan Persson and Conny Silfverberg comes from Brynäs.

By defeating Färjestad BK, 2-1, in the third and deciding Play In game for the 2014/15 Playoffs, Brynäs managed to get themselves to the quarterfinal round where they had to face Skellefteå AIK. The former Swedish champions Skellefteå became to hard to meet and Brynäs were knocked out in Game 4.

For upcoming season, 12 players left Brynäs. Among them Niclas Andersén, Bill Sweatt and Tim Wallace. At the same time, the team has recruited well. Players such as Nick Johnson, Petr Vrána, Jonathan Pudas and Marc Zanetti is certainly bringing in speed, physical play and leadership on the ice.

Brynäs have played three preseason games so far with the result of 2 wins and 1 loss. They have a +4 (10-6) in the +/- department and 1.33 scoring efficiency/game. The preseason isn't saying much and only gives a little hint for what to come, but if Brynäs can bring their preseason play with them in to the SHL, they will be a tough team to meet.
